Type of cuisine: "terra plata is located at the south end of the melrose market between pike and pine in seattle's capitol hill neighborhood. we are currently serving dinner tuesday to sunday from 5pm nightly, lunch tuesday to friday 11am to 3pm, and brunch saturday & sunday 10am to 3pm. in addition to our "earth to plate" inspired dishes, a full selection of wine, craft cocktails and beer are also available."
Ambiance: Driving up the corner establishment, we immediately loved the cool, and earth-friendly-looking interior. The floor-to-ceiling windows, of the one story building, topped with an open air rooftop deck, the wooden door open to welcome patrons into the space created a sense of home a few days before we were to head back to the other Washington. The concrete floors, cooling in the setting summer sun lead the way from the host podium to the long, banquet (or cafeteria) seating at the center of the space. We waited at the barquette up against the window, on wooden stools in the shape of an hollow rectangle for the fourth in our party to arrive prior to being seated. This gave us a great view of the wood plank door and rustic ceiling, brick pillars and extensive seating options. The seating continued to grow with the space inside, from the point of a triangle to the base, the bar engaging the center of that base. A bartender made his way around the center of the triangle-shaped bar, as local patrons in suits and polka-dot socks savored their meals.
What I ordered: We were eager and excited to meet a new friend at this dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our two-hour meal, starting with a Seasonal, house-made Rosemary Lemonade ($5), a glass of Diet Coke ($2), and glass of Orange Juice ($5). To start, we took my sister-in-laws' recommendation and selected her two favorites: House Made Potato Chips ($8) dusted with truffled sea salt, pecorino-chive cream, and Hand Cut Frites ($8) served with aioli. For our main entrees, mostly shared family style, I selected the Steak & Potatoes ($25), hangar steak, duck fat potatoes, charred leek salsa verde, crispy onions. Chris chose the Roast Pig ($24) served in a large bowl with chorizo, clams, smoked paprika, bay scented potato, chicharrón. Our dining companions brought Crispy Calamari ($17) bobbing in a Spanish red sauce, with hot smoked paprika crème, and Sea Scallops ($28) presented over smoked tomato vinaigrette, quinoa tabbouleh, and olive tapenade. To end our glorious meal, we delighted in two cups of coffee ($2.50 each), an order of Churros ($7) served with a shot glass of chili chocolate ganache and whipped cream, as well as an order of housemade Strawberry Ice Cream ($5) served with two mini biscotti.
What I loved: The hangar steak and potatoes were my absolute favorite, followed by the two potato-based appetizers. Of the entrees, the crispy calamari, specifically it's Spanish sauce were a hit for our taste buds and our gastronomic indulgence. Yum.
Why I loved it: The calming space, the natural, green decor, the unobtrusive music perfectly suited to a summer dinner experience with friends, the presentation and the creativity of flavors and textures with our food. Perfect.
