Just north of Tuscany’s Sienna lies the walled hilltop town of San Gimignano and one of Italy’s most famous white wines comes from there. Vernaccia, the grape is grown in other parts of Italy, most notably Sardinia, it is most famous from San Gimignano.
Tenuta Le Calcinaie, Vernaccia, di San Gimignano, 2012 comes from a hillside vineyard a few kilometers outside of town. It has a pale straw color with plenty of lemon, pear, apple and loads of minerals, especially slate on the nose. The palate is filled with lemon-lime, pear, golden delicious apples and minerals.
Enjoy this wine with salty cheeses and cured meats like prosciutto, also marinated vegetables and light fish and seafood preparations.
All of the grapes grown on the estate are done organically. The owner and winemaker, Simone Santini, believes in treating the land with respect. He also produces olive oil and honey
