Tending the flame - OLTL in review, December 27 - 30

Best Scene This Week:

Gigi’s return brought with it some interesting and emotional reunions, but none of them could top the reunion of mother and son when Shane was uneasy with the idea that Gigi could actually be his presumed-dead mother. He assumed it was a trick – that she was actually his aunt, Stacy, trying to dupe them again; and he was even reluctant to touch her at first. As Rex assured his son that she was, in fact, his mother, Shane’s eyes filled with tears to match Gigi’s and he muttered the word “Mommy?” before falling into her arms.

Soon after, an almost equally touching reunion occurred with Viki. Gigi thanked Viki for taking care of “her boys.” (There’s nothing like being presumed dead to show you who your true friends are.)

Eye Roll of the Week:

Delphina seemed to be the only one concerned about the lights flickering. If Dorian had still been mayor, Delphina would have gone straight to her, and Dorian would have been tracking down the problem.

Character of the Week:

Todd, whether good or bad, whether you love him or hate him, has proven himself as a dependable constant in the lives of those he cares about – for better or for worse.

As Viki wished her nephew, Jack, was a little bit less “Manning,” Todd was demonstrating how many parents feel about their children – even if Jack was in the wrong, and even if Jack did not want his help, Todd wanted to make things better for his son. With his distinct humor, he told Jack he needed him to be out of jail for the slave labor, so Jack could bring him his coffee and chicken sandwich.

Rama said that “letting your children spread their wings is the hardest part of the job, and parenting is already the hardest job of all” as Todd and Blair stood in the police station trying to figure out how to help their son.

Todd promised he would make it right. Todd, Blair and Tea were all good examples of parents who care and love no matter how “bad” their children are, and even Aunt Viki pointed out that Jack was “lost” and shouldn’t be given up on.

At the end of the week (in steady and true Todd fashion) Todd thought about the wrongs he had committed in the past year, realized that Tea suspected him of killing Victor, broke some of Dorian’s crystal, and gave the woman he loved a New Year’s kiss.

Quote of the Week:

"No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

Questions This Week:

David impregnated someone?  Do we know his child?  Do we know his child’s mother?

Now that Clint knows he has Stacy’s heart, will he be mean again?

Will Jack’s arrest cause a scandal for Dorian in Washington?

Is Tea drinking decaf coffee in John’s office?

Fail of the Week:

James and Starr’s argument seemed a little bit pointless. Yes, James should make it clear to Starr that he doesn’t agree with her decisions, but she is a Cramer girl and a Manning, so he should surely realize she’s going to do things her way whether he agrees or not. (In fact, their spat reminded me a bit of Dorian and Mel.) After they argued, James accused Starr of using her daughter as an excuse to stay home and left to go out without her, only to return soon after because he wasn’t having any fun without Starr. It was a bit childish.

Success of the Week:

At the top of the list, the biggest success of the week was Delphina’s speech about fire and love at Rex and Gigi’s wedding. She spoke of how a spark can fade if ignored or grow into a flame if tended as Bo and Nora, Clint and Viki, and John and Natalie looked on. Delphina’s insistence that Rex and Gigi had gone through enough to crumble other relationships was inspiring.

Secondly, Aubrey was so excited to see Rex again and perhaps stoke the flames of the potential romance while still being respectful to Gigi’s memory. When Aubrey found out that Gigi was alive she humbly let Rex go, obviously sad but unable to give up on the idea that there might be someone just as good out there somewhere for her.

Isn’t it great that despite what may happen in our lives, good art and good soaps can still make us believe in true love?
