iPhone backup batteries are becoming more and more necessary these days as iPhones get utilized for more and more tasks. These spare batteries seem to be touting larger and larger capacities and in turn are getting bigger and bigger. Many are now the size of a brick. That’s all fine and dandy if your pants have huge pockets (not to mention suspenders and a huge belt to keep them up) in order to store that huge battery while on the go, or if you happen to wear a backpack everywhere. Most of us don’t fit that description.
Some people out there are not power users and use their iPhone for its original purpose… making phone calls. Others use the occasional app, but they don’t spend all day staring at a 2” x 3” screen. For those people, a backup battery doesn’t need to be huge, heavy, and come with a built-in shoulder strap (or a coupon for the local chiropractor). All they need is something small and lightweight that can slide into a pocket, purse, or satchel. Furthermore, most of the small backup batteries on the market are typically in some kind of basic looking square/rectangle shape. Can anyone say “blaaand” and “boooring!”
This is where the “Plug” by Molla Space comes in. It’s a small backup battery for any Apple device, which has the older 30-pin charging port, such as the iPhone 4/4S. It has an 800mAh lithium ion internal battery and has a built-in 30-pin plug to connect directly to your device without the need for a cable between the battery and your iPhone. This is nice for those out there that frequently forget a cable to charge their iPhone. The 800mAh battery is a bit on the very low capacity end, but remember this device is best for people who are not power users and just want some spare power for emergency calls. The battery has enough juice to increase an iPhone 4S battery about 30% in roughly 30 minutes (based on charging an iPhone that is not being used while charging). One problem I noticed with the “Plug” was that it’s not easy to tell which side is up when you are plugging it into your iPhone. It would have been nice if it were marked in some way to indicate the proper orientation.
The manufacturer states it takes 3 hours to recharge the “Plug”. I found that it only took 1.5 hours if I used a USB charger that puts out 2.1A. The 3-hour charge time would be consistent if you were to plug it into a 1A USB charger (such as the one included with your iPhone). Speaking of recharging the “Plug,” it comes with a mini USB cable to get the job done. However, it doesn’t come with an AC/USB wall charger. Not a big deal for most users since many have a spare USB wall charger lying around someplace at home.
Obvious by the photos above, the stand out feature of the “Plug” is that it’s shaped like, well… a plug! If you want your backup battery to stand out from the crowd this should do the trick. It comes in black or white and there is also an included keychain lanyard thingy if you want to dangle it from your keychain, belt loop, backpack, or purse. You could even wear it as a giant earring or nose ring if you really want to show it off and make a statement. Where you end up storing it is totally up to you.
