How to Train Your Dragon 2

The LA Animation Examiner was privileged to attend a special Women in Animation pre-release screening of the upcoming, surefire, DreamWorks hit animated movie How to Train Your Dragon 2. The film unfurled to a full, enthusiastic audience on Sunday, June 1 at the crack of 10:30 a.m. in the lower depths of the Arclight Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Besides a lesson on how to treat a grateful sneak peek audience (free soda, popcorn, and a panel discussion complemented the complimentary entertainment), DreamWorks also demonstrated how to make an honorable 3D animated theatrical sequel.

Here are the top five teachable (trainable?) moments from this title:

1) Strong female characters are very watchable - Dragons 2 drives the Frozen point home: feisty female leads are fascinating. Valka (Cate Blanchett) is a mature, intelligent, and conflicted new character in the franchise, and one that has particular resonance with grown-up viewers.

2) The beauty of British and Scottish voices is undeniable - A standout is Craig Ferguson, fresh from his Postman Pat: the Movie cameo, as the hilarious Gobber. Gerard Butler's reprise of Stoick is impeccable too.

3) Tons of different dragons are feasible - There are thousands more dragons in the second Dragons outing, and to the LA Animation Examiner, all appear unique. In other words, it is possible to create a discrete army of characters on a budget (albeit a big DreamWorks budget, but a budget nevertheless).

4) CG stereoscopic technology makes airborne sequences both agreeable and enviable - No motion sickness from this journey . . . Only soaring scenes that are irresistible!

5) Additional installments of this property are more than conceivable; they are inevitable - There are online whisperings of Dragons 4 already; Dragons 3 is a given. The future is obvious, and it belongs to Dragons!
