As a child I didn’t care much for French fries but I adored tater tots. When I grew older I was sad to discover that, other than the grade school cafeteria, tots didn’t exist much in the real world. So imagine my surprise and delight when I recently popped into Busy Bee and found out not only were tater tots on their menu, they also had “loaded tots” with cheese, bacon and sour cream which is seriously “gilding the lily,” as they say. Fortunately, I like my lilies gilded.
Now you may ask what this has to do with brunch; I’ll tell you. Busy Bee has a small but extremely dynamic brunch menu - it changes almost every week. However one of the staples of all the Busy Bee menus is a variety of tater tots. On the day of my brunch trip they had tater tots with truffle oil and Parmesan and that was every bit as delicious as it sounds.
The rest of Busy Bee’s brunch menu is good, though somewhat unorthodox. I enjoyed a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato jam, gruyere and a side salad. I also sampled the crab cake sandwich which was delicious. Fear not, breakfast traditionalist: eggs and pancakes were also on the menu.
Since Busy Bee is also a bar you’ll be unsurprised to hear that they have a number of alcoholic options to wash down your breakfast. Among the usual Mimosas and Bloody Marys you’ll also find a wide range of beer. Busy Bee keeps a variety of beer styles on tap and deserves praise for their profile of delicious local craft beers and homebrewers. And if you happen into the restaurant on a balmy day, consider checking out the roof deck. Access is a little tricky, so ask the staff for help - the Raleigh skyline view is worth it.
So if you’re interested in a twist on your usual brunch experience consider Busy Bee Cafe. It’s a guaranteed tot extravaganza and take advantage of some delicious beer options to wash them down. Have fun!
