The great thing about New York is that you can find little slices of distant cities and cultures by just walking through a doorway. Cafe Zaiya has one of those doorways and theirs transports you to the smells and culinary beauty of Tokyo.
Technically a sit-down cafe, Cafe Zaiya offers an amazing variety of delicious food to take away. From a shocking variety of bento boxes with freshly made fish and vegetables to piping hot udon soups to light and airy cakes and pastries, Cafe Zaiya offers everything a first rate restaurant would. But it is priced like take-away food and carefully packaged to carry.
One of the big stars of Cafe Zaiya is the Mochi Doughnut. This doughnut is made with rice flour and has a chewy but not heavy texture and is magnificent! For lunch the chicken or fish bentos are great and come with healthy salads and vegetables as well as white rice.
The cakes are reason alone to come to Cafe Zaiya. There is a very surprising variety of cakes and all are Japanese style, that is light and airy and wonderful. It would be nice to try them all but there are few things on this earth that can compete with their Strawberry Shortcake.
