Like giant robots? Like giant monsters? Do you like Guillermo Del Toro? If you said yes to one or all of these questions do I have a movie for you. Pacific Rim is awesome. I will repeat, Pacific Rim is awesome. It's a giant robot versus monster movie that is a great deal of fun.
The world is under attack from giant creatures called Kaiju. To combat this threat humanity has created their own monsters, giant robots called Jaegers. Everything goes well until one day the monsters become too powerful and all that's left is an ex-pilot and a last ditch effort to stop the Kaiju once and for all.
I loved this movie. It was like being a kid and watching one of the fights between your toys become real. It's full of action and escapism, with over-the-top characters and larger-than-life stakes.
Now I won't lie the acting is not Oscar caliber but it's not meant to be, this is pure big dumb fun pure and simple. If your wanting gravitas and a true to life situation you need to look elsewhere. This is not Shakespeare, this is Neon Genesis Evangelion made real.
The cast is filled with a great deal of awesome characters. Charlie Hunnam's Raliegh Beckett as the dejected Jaeger pilot roped into one last fight is a cool character. He makes me think of anime heroes who are wild yet humorous. Idris Elba is a great commanding force as Stacker Pentecost, Charlie Day as Doctor Newton Geiszler adds some wonderful comic relief, and it's great to see Ron Perlman as the black market Kaiju parts dealer Hannibal Chau. And Rinko Kikuchi is a great addition as Mako Mori.
But you don't really care about the actors, what you want to hear about are the fights, am I right?
They are brilliant. I don't know exactly how they choreographed the fights, whether they used motion capture or just animated it in computers but they rule. From three armed robots to missile launchers in the chest all the Jaeger designs are great and so are the Kaiju. And when they start to brawl destroying half of Hong Kong or using cargo ships as blunt instruments you will be in awe.
My one complaint is that the fights are always at night. I would have loved to see a big fight in the daytime.
Look I'm going to break it down to this simple fact, if you watch the trailer and get excited then this film is for you because the trailer does not do the finished product justice. Five Stars.
Trust me though you need to see this film at least once. It is one of the best films I've seen this year.
