Take a look inside the Nazi occult with The Devils Rock

For some reason Nazi’s have become a popular concept to throw into the horror genre over the last few years. Surprisingly, most of them have worked on every level. The latest The Devil’s Rock, not only takes on the Nazi subject matter, but throws it right into the war itself.

The Devil’s Rock follows a group of commandos who discover a Nazi occult plot to unleash demonic forces to win the war. This New Zealand based film brings the Hitler obsession with the occult to the forefront to create an interesting original film. Most of the Nazi films have been of the zombie genre, but here they deal with conjuring demons and the hell mouth. The first half of the movie seems a bit slow as it is fairly silent during the opening invasion by these commandos, but once they come face to face with the Nazi’s things take a different turn. The second act of the film has a hint of Tarantino like dialogue taking place between two characters that carry the rest of the movie more or less by themselves. Once it moves forward to the big reveal this movie showcases some awesome make-up effects and clever visuals. When dealing with demons CGI or person in make-up, it makes or breaks the film on how well they look and they knocked it out of the park.

This isn’t one of the goriest films, but does sport some great bloody moments. The demon is amazingly well done and really takes this film to another level. Don’t let the title and camp look to the poster and DVD art fool you, this is not a cheese fest, but a pretty deep dark look at the occult that works really well.
