In 1995 Alyssa Milano decided to try and shed her child actor persona and stepped into an adult role in a big way with Embrace of the Vampire. The film also features fan favorites Jennifer Tilly and Jordan Ladd, but at the time of its release it was all about Milano. Now there is a remake being released so what better time to take a look back at this cult classic and how it holds up today.
Embrace of the Vampire follows a good virgin girl whose having some very bad dreams about sex courtesy of the vampire. Despite her slow transformation from innocence into sexual exploration, the vampire needs her to stay pure for three more days so he can take her so that they may live together forever. This film plays as a pretty standard straight to video film from the 90s but still manages to work today. It’s far from a great film, but defenitly delivers the erotic vampire genre as it set out to do. These days it’s hard to find a vampire film that really delivers without trying to cater to the teenage girl, but with this film it was pulling out all the stops letting the sexuality of the film stand in the forefront while the vampire aspect unfolds around it. Milano wanted to step out of the pure child actor persona and does so big time with one of her most revealing performances to date. Sure there is a lot of sex and nudity here, but there is also the vampire blood and killing making it an erotic horror film as opposed just an exploitation film.
This is far from a perfect film, but one that is a classic in the vampire world. In all reality most of the cult status this film holds was due to Milano’s revealing performance and always will be, but there is still a decent vampire film under there that any fan of the genre is sure to enjoy. You can grab a copy of this cult classic on DVD and Blu-ray now from Anchor Bay and be sure to check out the remake available now as well.
