If you are looking to satisfy your Mexican street food culture while in New York City, Tacombi at Fonda Nolita has you covered!
Tacombi at Fonda Nolita is located in the lower east village at 267 Elizabeth Street. This Mexican taqueria is set-up in a converted garage just off Houston Street. The ambiance alone will draw you in, you really feel like you are entering another world when you step inside.
I stumbled upon this charming gem while strolling through the lower east side, and could not have been more pleased with my discovery.
Little has been done to alter the garage-like atmosphere, which only adds to its simple, vintage charms. The simplicity of the interior along with the vintage memorabilia enhances the dining experience. In the middle of the restaurant you will find a classic red and white VW van which serves as a taco station and bar.
The menu would best be described as straight forward or focused. I dined on a late breakfast and ordered two breakfast chorizo tacos with eggs and potatoes. When served my waiter was very good at describing the many salsas that accompanied the tacos and recommended I experiment with all of them to see what suited me best. All salsa condiments proved to be pretty spicy, I went with the trusty red salsa that I recognized; the others were good as well, but I wasn’t up for any hot surprises or delayed heat.
The staff was incredibly friendly, thoughtful and efficient. The food and coffee were satisfying. The combination of food, wait staff, and atmosphere that transports one to a Mexican façade is what makes Tacombi at Fonda Nolita a must-try.
