Featuring a new 4K transfer and 7.1 surround sound mix, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" 40th anniversary restoration was a big hit with fans this past week at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Tobe Hooper was on hand to present his original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," which has since become the eighth-highest grossing horror franchise of all time.

According to Bloody Disgusting, having been shot on 16mm film stock and cheaper, tougher “reversal” stock, (which means there is no negative), the restoration started by taking the original 16mm film that rolled through the cameras and transferred all 120,960 frames to a 4K scan.

The first thing you'll notice watching the 4K scan on a big screen is how it amplifies the grainy appearance of the original 16mm film, but the image is still many times better quality when compared to older VHS, DVD, and digital versions currently available.

But what stood out most was the restoration's new 7.1 surround sound mix, which blows away all previous versions of the film available.

For fans of the original, seeing the restored film that helped to launch the slasher horror genre on a big screen is a must.

"The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" 4K restoration had its world premiere at SXSW, Monday, March 10th at the Topfer Theatre in Austin, Texas.

MPI/Dark Sky Films will release the restored version this summer but an official release date has not been announced yet.
