Switchfoot, the ultimate thinking man’s Christian rock band, is back with a fine new single called “Love Alone Is Worth the Fight.” The song, which precedes “Fading West,” the group’s ninth studio album due January 14, is an upbeat rock anthem – with just a touch of dance – that celebrates the battle to make love the central theme of life.
After opening with an affected wordless vocal section that sounds a little like a bird call, a pounding drumbeat introduces Foreman’s urgent lead vocal. And then lyrically, the heartfelt singer speaks of practicing what he preaches by stating, “Time to take my own advice/Love alone is worth the fight.” The song switches back and forth between Foreman’s nearly rapped vocal verses, and a melodically sung chorus.
“Love Alone Is Worth the Fight” explores a familiar Switchfoot lyrical theme, that of truly living what Christians say they believe, although it is not as catchy musically or as lyrically deep as past band releases. Yet at the very least, this new single whets the appetite for fresh Switchfoot music. Love is always worth the fight, just as Switchfoot music always worth the wait.
