Upon entering the Five Spot, several young people were exiting. With that in place, that sums up the story of Five Spot last night.
How often is there a show that resembles a lazy Sunday on a Saturday night, especially after such a sunny day in Atlanta? Well, unless Sweet Knievel is on the ticket, never. Not to knock the good, jamboree-like vibes Sweet Knievel has, nor downplay the excellent instrument playing of this band, but they just weren't befitting for a show on a Saturday night.
Although attendance seemed far below average for the Five Spot last night, the music surely wasn't matching the numbers. Besides, sometime music is best enjoyed by its quality and not by some silly numbers game. So setting all of the emptiness of the venue aside, the show was pretty darn good! A favorite was the second act of the concert, Sweet Knievel.
Sweet Knievel is a band based in Athens that fuses jazz, rock, and a little bit of funk into their sound. They also have some jam elements in their music, and even a little positive psychadelic vibe in their music. Minus a rapping frontman, their sound is like The Roots whenever the legendary hip-hop crew is in jam mode. Sweet Knievel may not be quite as organized, but they definitely have identical spunk.
As they played the night away, there were moments of some bad stage chemistry. Transitions between songs were fairly large, as they were trying hard to figure out what song to play next (despite having a set list in hand). Honestly, no one is perfect, but as a drummer, it's great for him or her to know the way selected songs should play. Maybe there were issues with time as it was early in the night when they were on stage.
Here is some video footage of their show. Overall, Sweet Knievel performed very well considering the circumstances. Hopefully, the attendace, or lack there of, isn't typical for a band like this. That could definitely lead to a lost cause, and anything with the same name as the best stunt man in the world shouldn't be a lost cause!
