In doing an article on sequels its fitting that the Scream franchise is going to be involved. However in doing so one must examine the rules laid out by aforesaid franchise.
Does its cohort, “The Child’s Play” franchise fit as a series of sequels, a franchise, or what? There are definitely more than three movies and each one is related with Charles Lee Ray who performs a voodoo ritual in the first movie to possess “A Good Guy” doll and begins going by the name “Chucky.” He is certainly interested in returning to life by possessing a child so that he can return to his life of a murderer.
The interesting thing and among the many reasons of running sequels for both platforms Horror Movie and normal movies are the multiple connections within these movies. So if you are a fan of the movie game, “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” then here’s a little trivia for you.
Jay and Silent Bob make a cameo in Scream 3 with David Cox. Wes Craven has a cameo in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. David Cox’s little brother, Alexis plays Damian in this week’s selection, “The Bride of Chucky.” Damian likes to pretend he is a psychotic killer to try and impress Jennifer Tilly’s character Jennifer. Jennifer is in love with the psychotic Charles Lee Ray.
Damian is used as a sacrifice to bring the soul of Chucky to respark inside the doll. Damian believes that the doll is a lame 80s throwback. Tiffany handcuffs Damian to the bed and does a sexy strip tease in order to try and seduce Chucky back to life. It works.
She thinks the ring he left on the mantle was the ring he had planned to propose with but he got it off of a rich lady that he had murdered. He mocks her and says that the first thing that they need to do is to find him a new body. So she mocks him right back locks him into the playpen she created in the hopes of having a baby.
All the while they have another story running concurrently with Katherine Heigel and John Ritter. Heigel is an orphan named Jade forced to live with her uncle the sheriff. She uses her gay best friend to try and trick him into letting her go to a dance since he doesn’t approve of her boyfriend. Ritter’s character is creepy overprotective. The minute she leaves he gets one of his deputy to follow them and pull them over for a traffic stop. He reveals himself to be a dirty cop.
Tiffany decides to play with Chucky who claims repentance about getting married. She goes out and buys a wedding doll, locking it into the playpen with him. Chucky is an evil genius and will never let anyone get him down for long. He is inspired when Tiffany channel surfs and watches some of “The Bride of Frankenstein.” He kills her by electrocuting her with her television while she’s in the bath tub.
In order to get back at Tiffany he performs the same voodoo ritual and traps her spirit into the wedding doll. After Child’s Play 2 the horror seems to go out the window as it becomes more macabre humor than anything else.
The stories connect when it is revealed that Tiffany leaves in the same trailer park as Jesse, Jade’s boyfriend. After all of the torment that Chucky has put Tiffany through, she gives him the advice to never take his girlfriend for granted. When she offers to pay him to take a road trip to deliver the dolls to the cemetery he is inspired to pick up Jade so they can elope.
Unfortunately their plan of course goes arrive when the Sheriff finds out Jesse is at his house. He plots to hide a nice sized baggy of pot in his car to frame him. Chucky is angry and Tiffany tells him he is so lamely old school. Tiffany inspires him to creatively kill the sheriff while Chucky grabs the pot. The deputy performs the traffic stop as planned but does he find the pot? This is the question since we already know that he doesn’t get a human body in this one as there are two other sequels: The Seed of Chucky and The Curse of Chucky.
