Any die-hard Styx fan would love to own this new compilation from Eagle Rock Entertainment. The Chicago-based rock band return with a new DVD and Blu-Ray and special limited edition two CD/DVD set of the supergroup's platinum albums Styx: The Grand Illusion Pieces of Eight Live; both played in their entirety for the first time ever live on stage at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, Tennessee in 2010. The concert regularly appears on the video music channel, Palladia on weekends.
The band was on fire and so were the audience. Front men lead guitarists-vocalists, Tommy Shaw, James JY Young and keyboardist-vocalist Lawrence Gowan; rocked the house along with Ricky Phillips (bass guitar-guitar), original bassist Chuck Panozzo and Todd Sucherman, (drums).
The concert begins with special film footage and video effects showing a guy fumbling through his vinyl record collection playing side one of The Grand Illusion. Then the band takes the stage and re-creates the sound live as it’s heard on the record. Towards the end of side one, side two is then performed. The Grand Illusion features fan favorites, Fooling Yourself, Come Sail Away, Miss America and more. Tommy Shaw introduces both albums.
Pieces of Eight side one and two follow suit. The album is known for hits, Blue Collar Man and Renegade. The final act ends with the video of the guy listening to the record and the band playing the last instrumental track, Aku-Aku.
I can’t get over what a showman Lawrence Gowan is! He stands up on his keyboard that spins around with the Styx logo and bounces around all over the stage! He’s quite entertaining and engages the audience in the show!
Tommy Shaw and JY still look very young for their age. I’m sure rock ‘n’ roll is the fountain of youth! Their flawless guitar playing and vocals are amazing! Experience the magic of Styx's phenomenal stage show live for yourself at a venue near you as the band is currently on tour. Visit their website for more information!
