Stylish Steady oxford is a standout: Gear review

Steady by Taos Footwear

The endless quest for a comfortable, yet stylish, shoe continues and the Steady shoe by Taos Footwear delivers. Traveling overseas requires a delicate balance between maximum mobility and a modicum of good taste, which is not always easy to achieve.

Sitting on a park bench in Amsterdam, watching a stream of passersby years ago, I pondered the question of why they all looked so fashionable and sophisticated and we (Americans) looked so sloppy and disheveled. The answers are myriad but one factor is footwear. For some reason we think we need to be shod for a trail run while Europeans can manage to walk miles on cobblestone streets and steer one-speed bikes in trendy, tasteful shoes. I vowed to attempt to look decent, even if it was impossible to pull off a polished veneer, no matter how light my carryon was. So the eternal search for the shoe that does it all persists.

I’ve been testing the Steady shoes for several weeks. From the moment I pulled them out of the box they felt special. The pewter color is rich and the swooping style reminiscent of a luxurious golf shoe crossed with a lace-up oxford. The materials invite touching; full grain leather alternates with soft suede. Behind the scenes, Aegis (now Microban) technology is at work protecting against foot odor through their antimicrobial compound. A removable footbed provides support or allows me to take it out to insert my a custom footbed. The construction is top notch. The gray in the pewter colored leather and the tan suede means that the color palette is extremely versatile and works with gray/black outfits as well as beige/brown fashions, and they dress up denim in a big way. The rubber sole gives me a secure grip while walking, yet the profile is not overly bulky. I’ve done a lot of walking in them without any foot discomfort whatsoever. My only concern is that I want to keep them looking nice so I’m not sure I’d want to take them out in a springtime shower. Every time I wear them I get compliments because they have that little extra something that sets them apart from the usual department store shoe.

I have found that, when traveling overseas, if there are any glitches with travel plans you are more likely to get good service to resolve the issue if you’re dressed presentably. On a long, trans-oceanic flight, it’s tempting to wear sneakers and sweats so you can pretend you’re in your pajamas. But if you don a comfortable but stylish outfit and pair of nice shoes like the Steady you’ll command more respect and avoid the “ugly American” stereotype.

Taos Footwear is inspired by the American Southwest, with its rich spectrum of colors and natural beauty. Their mantra? “Women shouldn’t have to choose between style and comfort.” Amen. They take beautiful fabrics and leather and give them a feminine touch by adding embellishments, such as stitching and stones. Their philosophy of blending creativity with nature extends to a digital cookbook, Taste of Taos, with a selection of some of their favorite flavors. They have an extensive and eclectic line of footwear ranging from sandals to boots.

If you’re looking for a stylish shoe to take to the streets of Rome or London this summer you can’t go wrong with a pair of Steady shoes on your feet.
