There are more than a few good reasons to treat yourself to a gourmet meal at Rossini’s, the award-winning Italian restaurant in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Master Chef Alfredo Russo is the culinary “tour de force” behind the internationally acclaimed Michelin star restaurant, Il Dolce Stil Novo in Turin. He has been consulting with Rossini’s for several years and is in Bangkok for a limited time only to create a new ala carte menu for the restaurant and host two spectacular wine dinners to be co-hosted by La Spinetta Winery in Piedmont and Allegrini winery in Italy’s Valpolicella region. The 5- Couse wine dinners will be expertly paired with wine and you can additionally take part in a wine auction to benefit “UNICEF Fund Raising Events 2013”.
The first wine dinner was held on Aug 23 and was an unparalleled success while the second event is scheduled for later this week. Be sure not to miss the "Allegrini Wine Dinner" which will be held on Friday August 30, 2013 at 19:00 hours. This event is priced at $124.30USD (4000Baht) net per person. The menu for the evening will include one of a kind delights such as John Dory w/ Sweet garlic Sauce, Broccoli & Crispy Brussels Sprouts; Tortelli Stuffed w/ Artichokes, Goat Cheese & Crispy Bacon and Potato Soup w/ Foie Gras, Black Truffle & Aged Parmesan Cheese. Reservations are highly recommended by calling +662 649 8364, or visiting the website at www.sheratongrandesukhumvit.com/en/store/winedinner. Guests who cannot make it to the wine dinner can still enjoy Chef Alfredo's a la carte menu every evening at Rossini’s from now until August 29, 2013.
La Spinetta Wine Dinner on Friday August 23
On Friday 23 August 2013, I accepted an invitation to the “La Spinetta Wine Dinner” where my expectations were not only met but exceeded. Even before entering the restaurant, I was greeted with an icy cold glass of Contratto Millesimato Brut, a light and sparkling blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from Piedmont. There was an alluring array of savory appetizers including an innovative cold Parmesan Cheese Popsicle, a nutty Pistachio & Parmesan Cheese Crisp, and an amazingly light and creamy Foie Gras Pate.
Dinner was served in the main dining area of Rossini’s which is a luxurious and sophisticated space with terracotta walls, wood beam ceilings, cobble stone floors and evocative Italian fresco’s on the wall. There is a stunning wood burning fireplace and bar that flank one entire side of the restaurant. While the service is quite good, the only disappointment is perhaps the small “pours” with the wine dinner which was more on par with a wine tasting. Another nice touch is that all the wines are described in detail by the wine expert form La Spinetta winery as they are being served.
The first course was one of the best with an offering of succulent Seared Shrimp w/ Fava Beans, Potato & Sage Chips. Simple and straightforward, the beans make for an unconventional surf and turf experience. It was served with La Spinetta Chardonnay Lidia 2008, which is an elegant and balanced wine with smoky aromas and spiced green pepper on the palette. Next was the elegant Salad w/Eggplant, Tomato, Coriander Seeds, Mascarpone & Basil. The sweet tomatoes burst with freshness in your mouth and the smoky eggplant is a fabulous foundation for the other ingredients. The salad was perfectly complemented by the engaging herbal and mineral notes of La Spinetta Barbera d’Asti Superiore Bionzo DOCG, 2009. The third course was Risotto w/ Candied Tomatoes, Oregano & Mozzarella Cheese matched with La Spinetta Pin Monferrato Rosso DOC, 2009, which is a hearty and bold red wine with complex notes of tobbaco and black cherry. In my opion it overpowered the risotto a bit, but it was, by far, one of the most drinkalble reds of the evening. Perhaps my favorite dish for the night was the Fillet of Beef w/ Caramelized Onions & Dark Beer Sauce served with La Spinetta Barolo Campe DOCG 2006. The red wine was well matched with the sauce and was superior with the tender beef that literally melted in the mouth. Three types of onions where used and it was elegant yet fully satifying. Dessert was also quite special with an Peach Soup w/ Amaretto Cream, Cocoa & Rum Jelly served with La Spinetta Moscato d’Asti Bricco Quagrlia, 2011 which is a fresh, delicately sweet white wine with complementary flavors of peach and honey. The soup was quite nice and chock full of firm peaches, sponge cake chunks and a delectible ice cream that was not too sweet. Overall the meal was quite cohesive and compelling, and you can expect the best of everything when you book an exclusive wine dinner with Chef Alfredo.
