By now the entire world should be a little more familiar with Norse mythology. With a character like Thor and what he has done for the Marvel franchise people have a distinct idea of what the hammer ‘God Of Thunder’ is capable of. But not all stories are filled with the blue eyed blonde haired Viking with a love for Midgard. In Vikingdom it is the exact opposite. Our Thor found in this film is a relentless killer of man on a quest to find Odin Horn. This horn has the powers to help Thor take over the world and the only person in his way is a forgotten Viking King named Eirick (Dominic Purcell). Based on viking mythology with a little asian flair to the film Vikingdom is a thrill ride of great fighting scenes overlaying a less than stellar story arch.
First and foremost from watching the initial trailers and clips of Vikingdom it was everything I expected. The inclusion of the asian man Yang (John Foo) really helped take this film to the next level. In any other case this would have just been a sword fighting snow filled battle of the gods film but the presentation of Vikingdom is very well done. Look i’ll be honest there is not too much to invest in any of the characters outside of Thor played by the frightening looking Conan Stevens (name appropriate) who may be the most intense character I've seen on screen in some time. He takes everything we know about the mythical god and throws it out the door. This thor would run with the Sons of Anarchy instead of the Avengers for sure and makes a great villain for this film. Dominic Purcell is a veteran in films like these so of course his performance never falters for a second. Some guys were just built for action films and he just happens to be one.
What will stand out the most to you on view Vikingdom is the amazing work to give this old tale a new age feel. Vikingdom looks great throughout the course of the film and the stop motion fighting sequences really take the film to another level. Hard not to compare this to 300 or the new Hercules film as it carries the same weight in regards to it’s visual beauty. That’s one of the good things about Vikingdom is you really don't even need to hear what's being said after your first time through. It would be nice just to sit down and see how amazing the film looks. This is a film I could totally see being played in the background of any nightclub that uses visual aids to compliment the music. Yes it looks that good!
While this is not the type of film to watch if you are looking for an intense storyline and heavy subject matter Vikingdom is very entertaining. In this “bro culture” of a world we have created it’s always nice to be able to watch a film and enjoy it for what it is and not be too critical. So if you want more than i suggest you find another film. If you are looking for awesome fighting, a few laughs, some big time action all placed on a wonderful landscape Then Vikingdom is a film you want to pick up this week.
