Stoney Point Grill in Mokena, Ill., was a delightful spot for lunch recently. I had never heard of this independent upscale sports bar and grill. I'll definitely be going back.
If you're a sports fanatic, there are 45 flat-screen TVs for your viewing pleasure in a granite bar with a Northwoods theme. Or try sloshing and noshing in front of the stone fireplace or at one of the large wood tables or cozy booths.
Food-wise, there's a lot to love here, from the sublime to lighter fare -- filets, ribs, seafood, gourmet burgers, sandwiches and main-course salads.
The special lunch menu is $7.99 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and includes fries or housemade chips.
Two in my party opted for the Blackened Prime Rib Sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onions and provolone cheese on a toasted garlic ciabatta roll. Another had the Pulled Pork Sandwich, slow-roasted and smothered in the house barbecue sauce and topped with onion straws.
I went with the battered and fried Mahi Reuben with Swiss cheese, jicama coleslaw, and 1000 Island Dressing on toasted marble rye bread. Both were excellent choices, especially the latter, which was so innovative.
Also among the lunch specials are main-course salads like Skirt Steak Salad, Asian Chicken, Cajun Chicken Cobb and others. The specials menu changes seasonally.
But the menu is huge and I hear the burgers are to die for and dinner entrées are available at lunch and include soup or side salad. These items caught my eye for next time -- walleye, halibut, chicken pot pie.
Amenities include daily drink and food specials, pari-mutual wagering and betting on horse races featured on one of the 45 TVs previously mentioned. There's a children's menu, all-you-can-eat fish fry on Fridays, and prime rib on Saturdays. And the parking lot is enormous!
