Steppenwolf play zooms in on destructive habits and their outcomes (Photos)

“The Motherf__ker with the Hat,” a dark comedy by Stephen Adly Guirgis, wonders whom can you believe and can destructive habits change. At Steppenwolf Theatre now through March 3, 2013, the play swirls around expectations, disappointments and other behavioral opposites.

A man’s hat, left in a couple’s apartment accidentally or on purpose, symbolizes betrayal and sets off a series of no-going back events. Once past the play's constant stream of profanity to express anger and frustration, the characters act out loyalty and betrayal, love and lust and caring and disrespect.

Steppenwolf ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro, Tony Award winning director of August: Osage County, directs “Motherf__ker” in Chicago after directing it on Broadway where it was a Tony nomination.

John Ortiz (LAByrinth Theater co-founder) is Jackie, a recovering alcoholic. Sandra Delgado (Steppenwolf, Teatro Vista, Silk Road, Goodman, Lookingglass) portrays Veronica, a user who has been Jackie’s girlfriend since 8th grade. Jimmy Smits (Broadway, NY and Colorado Shakespeare Festivals, TV’s Dexter, NYPD Blue, L.A. Law) is Ralph D., a recovered alcoholic who is Jackie’s sponsor.

Sandra Marquez (Steppenwolf, Teatro Vista, Victory Gardens, Goodman) is Ralph’s constantly betrayed wife,Victoria. Gary Perez (LABryrinth Theater co-founder, TV’s “Person of Interest,” “The Closer”) plays Julio, Jackie’s cousin who honors family ties.
