We finally hit State Social House last night. Well it’s only been open a few weeks so it didn’t take that long. But we’re glad we went. The place rocks and owns Sunset Strip with its welcoming vibe, no frills atmosphere and comfortable environment to socialize, sip drinks and savor the fine cuisine of celebrity chef Vernon Cardenas (formerly of Katana and Pink Taco).
The two-story building that once housed icons such as the Old World and a short-live Woody Harrelson raw vegan joint, has been transformed into communal gathering spot for the Millennium and young at heart generations (although we spotted mostly the former enjoying adult beverages and sharing plates of Cardenas’s creations). Also leaning more toward the young at heart era, we opted to dine in the upstairs lounge which has more comfortable chairs with backs than the benches and stools that provide table seating in the downstairs area. We’re glad we did because we got to listen to live piano music and vocals from a talented young woman who pounded the keys throughout our meal.
As we do when reviewing restaurants we worked our way through the menu ordering shared plates such as a tofu salad with vegetables and sesame dressing, Kobe meatballs with mozzarella, pan roasted Brussel sprouts with bacon and crispy cauliflower with jalapeno sesame aioli. We were going to settle for that until the Diva spotted a prime ribeye steak she couldn’t resist that was served with potato puree (although it was more like mashed spuds), broccolini and soy garlic sauce that was delicious and perfectly grilled. Courses are reasonably priced with the most expensive menu item being the steak at $34.
Richard had his martini ($13) to start and said it was also perfectly stirred and prepared. The Diva did her Chardonnay (an $11 Cuvaison Napa Valley).
Sports fan will appreciate the 20 TVs that were all tuned to the games last night. Smokers will be happy to know there’s a place for that in a special open air Backroom. In addition to a vast selection of beers (20 varieties to be exact), wines, specialty drinks and beverages, the restaurant offers the menu selection mentioned earlier plus pizzas, Mac & Cheese, Cardenas’ signature Whiskey Burger slathered with Jameson-onion jam, Buffalo Wings. Shrimp ceviche and pastas. Check out Chef’s BBQ Today Show on You Tube.
