Star Anna CD Release show at the Tractor. September 20th, 2013
Sporting frantic bleach blonde hair and a Jaws shirt dress Star Anna did her best Courtney Love for a packed house at The Tractor Tavern in Ballard for her Go To Hell CD release show Saturday September 20th. Joining Star were Ty Bailie (Keyboards), Jeff Fielder (Guitar), Will Moore (Bass), and Jacques Willis (Drums). The crackin’ ensemble played most of the new album out now on Spark and Shine records, and a couple inspired cover songs. Star proudly proclaimed “I know this is a overplayed cover, but I F**ing love this song,” before launching into an aching rendition of the Chris Isaac hit “Wicked Game.” Star invited special guest Shane Tutmarc to join in the fun for a few tunes as well as guitarists Tim DiJulio, who played some screaming leads, and Ian Moore on a rousing cover of Springsteen’s “Goin’ Down.” The final encore included a bevy of friends and Star’s dog on stage for a rousing chorus of “Come On Up To The House,” from the new album. With her voice in fine form and her persona as aloof as ever Star Anna is off and running with this new record, but long time fans may feel somewhat saddened that she is leaving the past and many of her much loved songs behind as it would have been great to hear this stellar new line up tackle them. Also on the bill supersonic jug band Sassparilla delivered a sweaty foot stomping set overcoming the sound issues by finally abandoning the stage and doing their final number in the middle of the crowded floor. Greta Graves opened the show with some lovely quiet songs that were mostly lost on the charged up crowd. She did bring her sister up to join her on a inventive cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop,” turning the pop throwaway into a mournful blues.
