Squirrels!!! An Informative & Entertaining Book About Our Favorite Mountain Mammal
by Anita K. Booth
Desert Hot Springs, CA: AKB Design, 2004
This delightful book includes color photographs and lots of informative about squirrels, their habitat and how to live with them. The animal in question is the Western Grey Squirrel, which often becomes a prolific pest in the San Bernardino mountains.
At the present time, we have a very small squirrel population, since most of them wer ekilled off by the West Nile virus a few years ago.
Bird lovers are constantly devising ways to keep squirrels out of their bird feeders, often without success. This book outlines how to build squirrel feeders and nesting boxes.
Booth recommends feeding natural foods to the squirrels. Table scraps and processed foods are bad for their health. Dried corn cobs provide a delicious treat for those little varmints. Other recommended foods include peanuts and sunflower seeds – UNSALTED. Salt, fats and oils are not part of their natural diet and can be bad for their health.
The book also covers the anatomy, habits and lifestyle of the squirrel. It would make a good reference for a school paper about squirrels.
The final chapter includes some cute squirrel stories. If you want to read them, buy the book.
It is available at McCabe’s & Company Booksellers on Lake Drive in Crestline, across the street from the post office and next to the Ace Hardware Garden Shop, where you can buy squirrel food, if you are so inclined.
