Spring Breakers takes spring break to a whole new level

When you hear names like Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez the first thought is that of a family friendly Disney-like film for the whole family. Well, much like tons of child stars like themselves they are taking that step out of the family film and stepping into something the furthest from it in Spring Breakers. When this film was being promoted it looked as though it would be just another upbeat teen adventure, but with the first images of James Franco and the unexpected trailer and posters it was clear this was going to be something no one expected.

Spring Breakers follows four college girls who rob a restaurant to fund their spring break vacation. When things get out of control and they are arrested it looks like their party is over until they are bailed out by a drug dealer and thrusts them into a lifestyle they never expected. To say this movie was unexpected is an understatement. The story is really basic, but thanks to the direction and format makes it even more interesting than it probably would have been. Some aspects are delivered out of order which keeps the viewer on their toes keeping up where some aspects are going. Everyone gives a good performance making the film feel like people just hanging out as opposed to acting. The real standout comes in the form of James Franco’s character Alien. He is reminiscent of Terrance Howard form Hustle and Flow, but so much more over the top that you can’t help but love and hate him all at once. He really seems to be having a great time with this character and it shows creating one of the more memorable characters in recent years. While this is a pretty dark film, it is filled with doses of what seems to be unintentional humor and plays really well.

It will be interesting to see how this film performs and how many people end up pissed after seeing it. There is no doubt that there will be those who never see the trailer and pay no attention to the R rating to see these usually wholesome girls new film, but make no mistake this is a drug, sex, nudity, and violent fueled ride that is sure to surprise people and maybe not be a huge box office smash, but defiantly a cult hit that you won’t soon forget.
