Spend your Halloween with Phoenix’s ‘Sleepy Hollow’

Long ago, a legend took shape revolving around a strange and frightening spirit known as the Headless Horseman.  This Halloween, the legend is brought to life by The Phoenix Theatre for Children in their stage adaptation of the famous story written by Washington Irving.  Adapted and directed by CATCO-Phoenix Artistic Director Steven C. Anderson, this show is entertaining for the whole family.

Following the story of Ichabod Crane, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow reveals that things may not be what they seem.  As he tries to win the heart of Katerina von Tassel, he also has to fight off the threats of her other suitor.  The tale of the Headless Horseman is currently flying through the town.  Halloween is in the air.  So the real question is, who is it that Ichabod Crane encounters on the covered bridge?  Is it really the Headless Horseman?

The stage adaptation is a pleasure to watch.  Songs of the time period are sprinkled throughout and sung with ease and enjoyment by the cast.  The structure of the show is reminiscent of a bedtime story, with narration weaved through the scenes and as transition.  The antics of the characters—from mocking Ichabod Crane during one of his lessons to a rather chaotic folk dance at the harvest party—can make everyone laugh and clearly hold the attention of the children in the audience.

The cast for Sleepy Hollow is wonderful and it’s very clear that they are all having great fun on that stage.  As Ichabod Crane, Danny Cipparrone is charming and funny.  You cannot help but root for him to win Katerina’s heart.  In the role of Katerina von Tassel, Liz Wheeler is a strong presence on the stage with a stunning singing voice, which she gets the opportunity to demonstrate during the story.  James Sargent plays Brom Bones with the perfect amount of venom.  Lisa Thoma, as the Barmaid/Margaret/Priscilla trio, is entertaining and humorous—her comfort on the stage is evident.  Matthew Hancock, however, stole the show in his roles of Biddy/Man/Nathan.  His antics as both Biddy and Nathan brought hysterical laughter out of the audience every time.  Thoma and Hancock are particularly impressive in their roles, as they switch characters at a moment’s notice.  There is no doubt that this cast is incredibly talented.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollowplays at the Riffe Center on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 31.  This is a show that will be enjoyed by your whole family, so don’t miss your chance to see this Halloween classic come to life.
