Set in the 1960s, three sisters form girl group and soon become local sensations with major label interest, but fame becomes a challenge as the close-knit family begins to fall apart. (IMDb)
Though the movie was inspired by the Supremes, the movie is a semi-original, vamped version of the original film from 1976 under the same title. Top performers Jordin Sparks and the late Whitney Houston showed off their vocal talents. However, the movie had a very Dreamgirls-esque vibe about it.
It felt unoriginal and cliche. "Sparkle: The story of three sisters. One who is obviously a druggy and abused by her husband (the Black Sheep), one who doesn't really matter and then goes off to medical school (the Middle Child), and the one who rises to stardom despite her lifelong sheepish demeanor (the Runt)."
The movie deserves three stars for the following reasons alone:
- Good cast
- Great vocals/songs
- Whitney Houston
