Mel Brooks has always been a favorite director of many different types of people and if you were in Las Vegas Saturday the fourth of February this year, you saw an example of this fact. We were lucky enough to be told of a free showing of Spaceballs (Part 11), one of Brooks’ more popular films and for good reason.
When we arrived, we were treated to not only the movie, but to trivia, prizes such as graphic novels and plush videogame characters, a brief history on one of the groups that helped to make this event happen who called themselves "Very Awesome Girls Into Nerdy Activities" which is shortened to exactly what you think it is, and of course invitations to coming events at the Rave theater which was nice enough to have us.
The people there were respectful of others watching the movie, but when this is said, what is meant by it is that they were actually funny when they shouted their cheers and jeers at the screen. Indeed, the Rave apparently longs for the days of Mystery Science Theater and Rocky Horror Picture Show as they encouraged audience participation and discouraged bringing children to their shows similar to this one.
For those who have not seen this cult classic, it features a spoof of Star Wars which lingers mostly on phallic and tongue in cheek aspects of comedy as well as the fact that Star Wars has made more on merchandise than any movie in history. It features a great cast as well as Mel Brooks himself… as more than one person. It is a fun experience watching this movie even at home for those who grew up with dry wit and the original SNL cast, or even just those who can respect older movies for what they are and the time in which they were made.
Everyone left in a great mood, all talking about this and other works of Mr. Brooks. Several people were surprised to meet old friends there whom they hadn’t seen in years that still shared a similar taste for sci-fi and satire. At almost three in the morning all went home wondering one thing: since they take requests on what to show, what will the next movie be?
