Southampton on Long Island’s south fork in New York is a swanky beach town on the Atlantic Ocean. Beach front mansions, fancy parties and the stars the attend them is the vision of this town. And what self-respecting town wouldn’t have a brewpub located within its borders? Hot summer days call for some chilled liquid refreshment in the form of beer. When the hot summer eases into fall and the chill hits the air and the stars retreat back into Manhattan and Miami a different type of beer is called for. Full bodied, rich and perhaps a few extra degrees of alcohol help take off the chill.
Southampton Publick House Imperial Porter 7.2%abv is the right beer to stave off winter’s chill. It also seems fitting for the Christmas season, because this style of beer reminds one of the beers that Charles Dickens’ characters would have been drinking. Maybe not Scrooge, but all the chimney sweeps and workingmen drank porter in those days in Olde England. The Southampton Imperial Porter is dark brown verging on black with a thin dark tan head. The nose is filled with smoky toasted malt. The palate is very smoky and the dark malt makes it very full bodied. The slightly higher alcohol content does give it a pleasing warming effect your body.
Enjoy this beer by itself next to the fireplace or with some smoked meat and cheeses.
