There are a few more performances for you to experience the splendor of South Pacific at the Times-Union Center’s Moran Theater here in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Take a look at the original post right here. You don’t want to miss this classic romantic, military-setting musical that will remind you of many musical scores from the past. Military discounts are still available for select shows. Contact the theater to reserve this special rate.
Upon entering the theater, there is a description of the storyline projected on a screen. The beautiful scenery depicts similarities of the motion picture created by Rodgers & Hammerstein. Directed by a young enthusiastic conductor, the orchestra takes the audience from one memorable song to another. The cast members are the best of Broadway (was that “Rosie the Riveter” in the cast?). They are professionals who can carry a tune and recite comedic lines while performing some mature connotative scenes. This musical may not be recommended for children of a young comprehensive age.
With all the familiar songs, you will see how this musical drama received 10 Tony Awards. The music is fantastic and in the first 20 minutes of the first act, you will hear many popular tunes. Since Jacksonville supports the Naval Air Station Mayport & Naval Air Station Jacksonville, there appeared to be many retired individuals and family members who appreciated the storyline of South Pacific, nonetheless anyone will appreciate the performance. This Baby Boomer was among the attendees along with those of the Silent Generation and ushered in a new generation of viewers.
If you’ve never seen the motion picture than seeing this production is interesting. It has representations from past USO shows, when our soldiers were entertained while being deployed across the seas. Some of the story line could mimic similar situations that our seamen might encounter in their travels abroad today, but the music was the primary winner.
