Café Krishna is an Indian restaurant in Chandler that specializes in food from the southern part of India. It is located on the south east corner of Rural and Chandler Boulevard. Recently we ordered take out dinner from the restaurant. The menu has a variety of rice crepes called dosas, steamed rice dumplings called idlies and rice pancakes called uttapams. Also featured are Indian curries and appetizers. You can peruse the menu at http://www.cafekrishnaaz.com/Appetizers.html
We had ordered Café Krishna Special Rawa masala dosa, Mysore Masala dosa, a plate of idlies, Chole Bature and Vegetable Manchurian. All the dosas and idlies were very good. A plate of idlies comes with three idlies at this restaurant (which is one more that most Indian restaurants). The Vegetable Manchurian was also good with the right amount of heat and spicy. However, the Chole Bature though huge in size is not up to mark. I have eaten better chole in many other valley Indian restaurants and even the bature was more crispy than chewy. The food comes with lentil soup called sambar and a set of white and red chutneys. The sambar on this occasion was watery with barely any vegetables. The white chutney which is usually made with chickpeas and coconut pureed together was also watery with barely a hint of the coconut. It also tasted a little stale. The red tomato chutney was good. I even used the leftover red chutney as a spread for making sandwiches for next day’s lunch.
The restaurant is a sit down facility with proper tables and chairs and the décor is neat with Indian motifs though not overwhelming. On one occasion when we visited to eat at the restaurant, the food was served in proper table ware. However the service is rather slow. If you plan on ordering take outs, plan to phone and order at least 40 minutes in advance. The takeout food is packed in paper bags and Styrofoam boxes and usually gets cold by the time you eat it. The restaurant has to figure out a way to keep food warmer in its takeout orders. Dosas do not taste the same if you microwave to warm them.
Overall, Café Krishna is a good place to visit for South Indian food. The food is all 100% vegetarian and they also have gluten free and vegan alternatives. For North Indian cuisine however, there are better restaurants to go to in the Valley. You can look up the restaurant details at their website http://www.cafekrishnaaz.com/index.html
