If you're "big" on a very affordable and decent-tasting breakfast, South Cape Diner in Cape Coral may have just what you are looking for. A recent Sunday morning visit to this downtown Cape Coral, Fla., restaurant turned out to reveal an eatery that takes great pride in the size of its servings as much as the good quality of the food and its reasonable prices.
One choice is a 12-inch-long veggie omelet crammed with big-fat mushrooms, finely sliced cuts of green, red and yellow peppers, and diced onions and tomatoes, making this meal well worth the visit ($6.95, add $1.00 for Egg Beaters egg substitute product).
An equally large cheddar cheese omelet of real eggs ($5.50) was equally impressive, and may have taken four or five eggs to create. A small takeout biscuit and gravy dish was pretty good too ($2.95).
Each breakfast came with a choice of home fried potatoes, hash browns or grits, and two slices of toasted bread. A cup of fruit (strawberries, pineapples, apples and cantaloupe cuts) may be substituted for an item.
Whipped butter and Welch's brand of jams and jellies were readily available, as was selections of sugar, sweeteners and coffee creamers. The only “problem” a diner may face is whether a take-out box will be needed because of the portion size!
Don't expect anything fancy at the 2,245-square-foot South Cape Diner -- including the assortment announcements about specials and other informational postings on plain white papers that are taped to walls and doors.
Plus, the modest floor space leaves for little privacy, so business meetings are probably done better elsewhere. There are about 10 booths and as many round tables, but it's all an open-air floor plan with no buffers for quiet time
While Cape South Diner specialized in breakfast and lunch since opening, it now serves dinner beginning at 3 p.m. with daily specials, including prime rib night on Saturdays.
Overall, Cape South Diner breakfast offers a basic, pleasant dining experience at excellent prices considering the amount of food one gets. But when it's busy, such as a weekend morning, be prepared for a server who may seem a bit hurried because she has a whole lot of ground to cover.
The server visited once after serving breakfast, and seemed a bit difficult to flag down during the one-hour meal. Overall though, it was a nice breakfast.
