In the railroad style Food Court in DT Berkeley, 'Source Mini' has made itself known from its place in this rear corner arcade. At this second location providing fast and friendly service for their wooden high bar or take out, one can watch the open kitchen from the available seating. Source stands out with hearty and hot vegan/vegetarian food, leaving sprouts and fresh greens largely behind for thoroughly marinated and masked vegetables served fried or grilled with all sorts of accompaniments. Coded with candid names like 'Quack', 'Cluck' and 'Moo' don't be too fast to judge them as juvenile. The 'Buffalo Bytes' are a bit thick and chewy, tossed in the traditional sauce so enviably available to carnivores and yet still delightful for the sauce loving vegetarian. The 'Moo Lettuce Wraps' are a hit with their juicily marinated 'moo' scooped over fresh, crisp lettuce and zig-zagged with a spicy aioli.

Although 'Source' has thoughtfully supplied a choice of salads, the best advice would be to skip them. You can't toss a Birkenstock in the Bay Area without hitting a good salad, so if you're only in for one trip go big, go straight for the hot food. The 'BLTO' has a spicy vegannaise that is not to be underestimated, so consider this before going heavy on it. The bread here as in all of the sandwiches is fresh and soft, and though there's a lot of it, no regrets.

The 'Hoisin Burger' is king and a not too spicy. With a 'patty' compiled of beets and chard and other veggies tossed in a fryer so it comes out with the texture of a grilled and humane burger. What's not to like when you can even add a side of fries? Source is also in cahoots with Five Stars so whatever you buy there exchanges into points on your account so before long you can get fries, dessert or a sandwich for free. Oh yah, they have desserts there, 'Whoopie Pies' with fresh berry compote and such. But if that doesn't catch your fancy you can always just turn your body 90 degrees and check out the gelato place right beside them.
