Sound Mixing during the live event

There were points during the live NBC event that viewers could hardly understand the actors because of all of the white noise. There were also points where the orchestra was playing and it was beautiful expect that it was supposed to be softly playing under the dialogue but it was over powering the actors. This is not a way for anyone to defend the acting of Carrie Underwood, because that is not what is going on here. The truth is that it may not have been as noticeable to someone without a background in arts and entertainment, but many people in the field or around the field have commented several times over the past few days that the sound mixing didn’t help the live event at all.
They seemed to have less trouble during the songs then during the regular dialogue. It also seemed to grow worse and worse throughout the production. There were not as many noticeable issues toward the beginning of the live event, but once you reach around the middle and the large gathering at the Vontrapp home, it is growing more and more noticeable to viewers. At one point Maria is speaking with one of the children in the grand foyer of the home and you can hardly understand what any of the actors are saying even when paying close attention.
With all of the time they spent rehearsing for this live event, there must have been several technical rehearsals as well. With NBC reportedly spending 9 million dollars on the production, you would think that the sound quality would be out of this world. Look at all of the awards shows and other live events that are televised live on a regular basis. Look at the reality shows that are done weekly and their sound mixing is never this terrible. Surely NBC could have done better.
