Oakland, California's Souls Of Mischief, comprised of emcees A-Plus, Phesto, Opio, and Tajai, have teamed up with music producer Adrian Younge for their sixth studio album, There Is Only Now. After over twenty years since the release of their debut album, 93 'til Infinity, the four man group who are also part of the Hieroglyphics collective are back to tell a story, showcase a unique album concept, and highlight the exquisite musical flare of a rising star in hip hop producing. Hosted by A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad for the fictional radio station K-NOW, There Is Only Now contains many mini stories that are connected under the umbrella of a larger story about a street killer who gets his just deserts at the hands of the album's protagonists. These detailed stories of urban violence and broken love are told in first and third person, with each artist on the album playing a unique role, like characters in a play. The whole tale unfolds to the sounds of Adrian Younge's wholesome, cool-jazz beats, which match the feeling of each situation like the soundtrack to a motion picture. Listeners will be taken by these alluring musical backdrops, and they will be absolutely captivated by the skilled rhyming and evocative storytelling of the Souls Of Mischief and the guest emcees on the album. There Is Only Now is truly outstanding.
