The weekend got kicked off with a bang when Soul Rebel and the Beast shook the Jazzhaus with two wild sets of reggae funk, including DJ Stiga, keeping the jams going between sets. The Topeka based reggae group won the Waka Winter Classic over many worthy opponents, Friday night they reminded Lawrence of the reggae goodness that earned that victory with a full two sets of jah bliss.
The seven-piece band takes sounds from various genres including jazz, funk, hip-hop and rock, but most especially reggae, which gives their dance-tastic jams their jamaican flavor. Utilizing a smooth saxophone, hip keys, wicked guitars, pumping bass, driving drums and passionate vocals, the band puts together a unique style that their fans love like no other local band.
The Jazzhaus was packed to the gills Friday night before the first set was finished. The full dance floor kept on dancing as DJ Stiga started throwing down beats and tunes for the interlude. The party continued as the venue continued to fill, with a healthy flow of music lovers moving between smoking patio, bar and dance floor. DJ Stiga kept the energy high and the crowd in good spirits throughout the set break.
For their second set Soul Rebel and the Beast played an even more epic set of energetic reggae funk. The dance floor burst beyond capacity with fans filling the tables and aisles to get close to the music, while the bar remained swamped with drinking listeners. It was clear from start to finish that this band earned their place at Wakarusa Music Festival this Summer, bringing the same good vibes, and loving fans to the Jazzhaus that they always have.
If you are at Wakarusa this Summer do not miss these guys, but also keep your eye out for more local shows in the future!
