There is something truly magical about shopping outside on a crisp winter’s day, with flurries falling upon you, while welcomed by even crisper Ontario apples.
Welcome to the Sorauren Farmers Market, where the people are friendly (both vendors and shoppers alike), the food is local and tasty samples are bountiful. Every Monday, from 3pm to 7pm is where you can begin your edible adventure.
Today’s offerings are listed on the board out front, and stepping inside is a truly warming experience. There are two floors of goodies, and although it’s a small space, it’s very well used. Start with a sip of nettle tea from Kind Organics, work your way around the sprouts, root veggies and Venison meat and stop by my favorite first floor stand - Bees Universe.
Bees Universe offers local honey, propolis, royal jelly and now offers eggs. What makes their eggs so special? For starters, these are happy eggs, coming from free-run, organically fed happy chickens...and the chickens are fed propolis! Making these eggs an incredibly nutrient dense superfood.
Heading upstairs, my nose leads the way towards De-Floured, a local gluten-free company that truly makes the most delicious gluten-free baked goods. Even the biggest bread lover could be fooled by their tasty, and often slow food approach to baking.
A tour around, speaking to each vendor is well worth the time. Another baked goods table offers to custom make a loaf for one of the shoppers, while a Toronto market staple Chocosol hand makes the most delicious taco I have ever eaten, and they also have the tastiest chocolate; using bike-pedal power to create their chocolatey goodness. With ingredients like agave, hemp and fresh roasted cocoa; you can enjoy your chocolate with every bite.
Not every market in Toronto is created equal, some are larger, some smaller and some much busier. The Sorauren Market is truly a community experience. You’ll find both delicious and healthy foods here, but also great conversations and an opportunity to be inspired and learn from the farmers directly.
The only thing missing from this market is Mycosource/Fun Guy Farms; the most delectable mushrooms one can find. Nevertheless, this is one of my favorite markets in the city and draws me in every Monday.
Go hungry! You're sure to leave sastiated.
