After breaking onto the scene with the original SAW film James Wan has been proving over and over that he is a master of horror. His 2010 film Insidious showcased an old school horror vibe and really surprised audiences, but much like most of this genre left it not only open for more trips into this world, but in a literal cliffhanger. Thankfully that film did well enough to continue its story with the aptly titled Insidious: Chapter 2. Thankfully they were able to bring the entire original cast back, but does it bring something new to the story or just feel like a rehash of the original film?
Insidious: Chapter 2 follows the Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. One of the great things about the first film was that 70s style feel to it and thankfully it maintains that same feel. The story picks up almost exactly at the same moment of the previous film making the overall experience feel more like a continuation as opposed to a sequel. A lot of sequels can be watched without having to revisit the original, but it is highly recommended that you watch the original film prior to seeing this to fully get the full effect of the entire story. When the film opens it goes into some directions that was originally a bit slow and seemed like it might be a forced sequel, but then suddenly the story takes numerous different directions that not only cleverly continues the story, but also connects elements of the events of the first film as well as this one. Beyond the already understood possession/haunting nature they add a slasher-esque element that takes it to a new level making for a great over all follow-up. The performances were great with everyone seemingly stepping right back into the story like they never left. There aren’t a whole lot of really scary elements, but defiantly brings the creepy factor in full force and brilliantly executes the overall film.
James Wan has once again shown that he truly is a force to be reckoned with as a filmmaker in the horror genre. This could have easily been a throw away sequel that was just a cash grab, but there was some brilliant storytelling and real passion you see in this project that made for a great follow-up. This is not just a sequel but the continuation of a bigger overall film that is something that is rarely done or works. If you enjoyed the first film, then you are sure to really enjoy this one as well. This film once again leaves things open, but in a clever way that allows them to move on with something new and different, but if not is a perfect cap to this series.
In addition to the film, this Blu-ray sports a slew of haunting features including webisodes, various Q & A and behind the scenes featurettes. Fans of the original will not want to miss out on this latest chapter in the series so grab your copy in stores now.
