Ohio-based singer/songwriter Lydia Loveless is one of those rare artists that shatter the country mold into a thousand shards and emerge with something entirely their own. With a countrified rock sound, a voice one can liken somewhat to the great Stevie Nicks, and lyrical content which is more often than not on the personal side, Loveless has unquestionably written and recorded one of top roots albums of early 2014. Titled Somewhere Else, this ten-song album on Bloodshot Records delves into straight-up rock'n'roll, twangy punk and alt-country, and explores topics such as love, failure, restlessness, lust, and all of the wonderful and terrible places one's mind and heart take one in life.
With songs like "Wine Lips," "Head," "Verlaine Shot Rimbaud," and the title track "Somewhere Else" Loveless and Co. (Ben Lamb on bass, Todd May on guitar and vocals, and Nick German on drums) have given us a truly inspired album. And it is also the sort of album that can be appreciated even by those with a strict anti-country music listening policy.
Somewhere Else by Lydia Loveless is available on CD, LP, or digital download from Bloodshot Records.
