Finicky Seattle weather provides the perfect excuse to catch “Something’s Afoot” the murder mystery musical currently being presented by Taproot Theatre. A mystery set conveniently at a country estate, on an island, in the middle of the lake. Before you even have a chance to meet all of the characters they seem to be dissappearing. You and your neighbor might find yourselves rushing to read the clues and solve the mystery.
Ian Lindsay as Geoffrey gives a commanding performance andTim Tully as Flint provides delightful comic relief. The loyal Taproot audience was loudly supportive during the opening weekend, but I found myself at times wrestling against music and choreography that just did not seem to mesh. I hoped that the music would improve as the play moved forward, but instead I found it to be an ongoing distraction. Yet the actors were seemingly undeterred and managed to keep the audience enthralled.
The Taproot set design team has once again pulled off a wonderful transformation. I have decided to nickname the little stage that could at Taproot the MacGyver! The booby traps were unexpected and well executed.
This presentation seems to be a bit of a detour from the typical fare provided by Taproot Theatre, but if you are looking to solve a little mystery “Something’s Afoot” is the perfect place for you to be.
