So-so At Delvickios

Delvickios is an Italian restaurant that is known for their classic Italian dishes as well as their made from scratch desserts. Since opening in 2003, they have expanded to have six restaurants in the Boulder County area. The restaurant being reviewed on this particular excursion is their newest location in Superior.

The restaurant is very cozy, with its classic red and white-checkered tablecloths and Italian photography on the walls (two classics one comes to expect in Italian restaurants). Although, is 80’s pop music really an appropriate choice to blast while enjoying dinner? Not so much.

The dessert menu is a mix of classic American desserts, such as blueberry crisp, and classic Italian desserts, such as tiramisu. The Chocolate fudge cake is described as being “nice and simple”, which is a fitting description. A single layer of chocolate cake is served warm with a creamy chocolate frosting and a dollop of whipped cream. It is both light and chocolaty, and the fact that it was served warm was definitely a nice surprise! Though the name “fudge cake” is slightly misleading, it was still flavorful and worth trying.

The Italian lemon cake is described as “a dense lemon cake with a lemon glaze” and seems to be considered one of their specialties. Unfortunately, I have few nice things to say about this cake. The presentation was beautiful, a single layer of lemon cake served with a layer of lemon glaze on top, and finished with a dollop of whipped cream and a raspberry drizzle. However, the intense lemon flavor was incredibly tart and had a very artificial taste. The density was also too much, feeling almost like an engorged sponge. Very disappointing.

Though leaving with mixed reviews, the love in this restaurant is still very prominent and is enough to give them a second chance. With a few tweaks, this restaurant’s dessert menu can be a big hit.
