Last night, the 17th Hollywood Film Awards, the first awards show of the 2013 film awards season, took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, and every big-name honoree showed up…yes, it smells like Oscars!
We are still 19 weeks away from the 86th Academy Awards Ceremony that will be held on March, 4th 2013, but the race has begun! And one of the favorite movies this year is the sci-fi thriller Gravity, written and directed by the Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. The Warner Bros’ film topped the box office for a third straight weekend with $31 million in domestic ticket sales, and it has now grossed $170.6 million domestically and $284.8 million worldwide.
According to these numbers, it is more than likely that you have seen it by now, and that you are already a huge fan. Personally, I had never enjoyed the IMAX 3D experience as much before (yes, if you haven’t seen it yet make sure you do it the proper way: IMAX 3D). The impeccable direction of Mr. Cuarón makes Gravity one of the most delightful movie going experiences of the last years. This obstacle and human overcoming "don't let go" plot, the setting, the space context, the story telling, and the great performances of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, make of this film a masterpiece.
Gorgeous, entertaining, moving, funny, and, what’s more important, it has that “wow” moment, that magic that only movies can bring to our lives; the essence of filmmaking.
Bravo Cuarón, bravo. If I were you, I would start preparing a speech for March the 2nd…
