"Small Apartments", a new movie that has just been recently released on DVD, shows the fallacies of little men. By little I mean in the way they behave, not their stature. In fact, the protagonist of this feature is obese, bald and an albino (Matt Lucas) who looks like he murdered someone.
His main dress seems to consist of a bad wig, white briefs, gym socks pulled up to his knees and green clogs. That is when he actually leaves his ratty motel room now converted into a small apartment. Not someone who you would see as even being in his right mind.
Surrounded by men (and sometimes women) who act bigger than him, often putting him down even though they appear to lead even more messed-up lives. Dreaming of one day escaping to a lush Swiss mountain countryside where he can play his horn. Straight out of a Ricola cough drops commercial. In truth he is the easiest character to like in this weird, one-of-a-kind film.
A Dramedy by innovative music video director turned filmmaker Jonas Akerland ("Spun") and featuring an impressive cast that includes Lucas, Billy Crystal, James Caan, Peter Stormare, Johnny Knoxville, James Marsden, Juno Temple, Dolph Lundgren and Rebel Wilson.
Slowly building, this quirky film doesn't reach it's full potential until the end (a little like the main character Franklin Franklin). But, before that viewers are treated to some laughs, incredible visuals and tiny scenes of some great acting. Crystal, Caan and even Knoxville get to flex their muscles in snippets that convey lives that may be shallow however there is always a second chance to fill it up by doing what you want. Showing that happiness make us what we truly are, little men with big dreams.
