The musical comedy, Sister Act, opened a run at in Detroit at the Fisher Theatre on Tuesday. The Broadway show will be running through May 4.

Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act tells the story of aspiring singer Deloris Van Cartier (Ta'Rea Campbell) who is in love with a mobster named Curtis Jackson (Melvin Abston) in Philadelphia in the 1970's. Deloris witnesses Jackson commit a murder and after running away heads to the police station where she meets "Sweaty Eddie" (Chester Gregory), a cop who had a crush on her in high school.

He puts her into the witness protection program by sending her to a convent; the last place anyone would think to look for her. Under the watch of Mother Superior (Hollis Resnik), Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she rediscovers her own.

The show does a great job of showcasing the power of friendship and the healing power of laughter.

There are some cheesy moments but the lively cast pulls it off as they belt out one passionate song after another.

The high production value also makes for an entertaining evening as the scene changes from the club to the police station to the church move flawlessly alongside a variety of over-the-top fashion choices.

In the end, the show's success is driven by the chemistry between Campbell and Resnik, who really drive home their character's obvious differences while effortlessly conveying how those differences end up creating a bond between them.
