Anyone that has ever visited the Odell Brewing Company brewery in Fort Collins Colorado has likely seen a beat up old pickup truck hauling away spent grains. This truck belongs to Lugene, the farmer who has been using these spent grains to feed his dairy cows for over a decade. These hearty malts have provided the cows something tasty to eat and are a wonderful reminder of how brewers and farms work together in the local community. Named in the farmers honor Odell has introduced a new beer to their 4 pack series. This 8.5% Chocolate Milk Stout named Lugene is brewed with milk sugar and milk chocolate and could be considered the adult version of cold chocolate milk.
Color:
Lugene pours an extremely dark brown color with a thin tan head that fades to a thin ring around the glasses edge providing patches of lacing after each drink.
Aroma:
Right away a strong roasted malt character arrives on the nose with delicate notes of smooth chocolate and cream.
Taste:
The milk chocolate really shines in this brew with semi sweet characters and cream that keep the roasted notes in the layer underneath along with a slight coffee flavor at the end with lingering flavors of the chocolate and cream remaining in the finish.
Mouth Feel:
This brew holds a medium to full body in the mouth with low levels of carbonation making it very smooth and easy to drink with a slightly dry finish that continues to hold notes of chocolate and cream on the palate until the next sip.
Suggestion:
Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout from Odell Brewing Company is a very good example of the milk stout style as its main highlights are its sweet chocolate flavors and extremely smooth drinkability. This is a brew that all levels of craft beer drinkers will be able to enjoy because while it does have layers of complexity the layers are easy to separate while tasting. Lugene is available in 4 packs and will available at most Denver area beer stores January through March.
