With her husband, Martin (Channing Tatum) serving the last days of his prison sentence due to insider trading, a depressed Emily (Rooney Mara) continues to spin out of control before she is admitted to a hospital to see psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law).
A simple diagnosis, a prescription and Emily is left to her own devices. But the medicine she’s prescribed has no effect on her condition. It’s not until she’s given a new experimental drug is she able to recognize her old self. And Martin’s glad the woman he married has returned…yet, small signs show Emily is slipping away and this isn’t the woman he married.
She’s doing things he doesn’t recognize: cooking, blasting the stereo setting the table for multiple guests, all while sleepwalking. Yet Emily convinces Dr. Banks and Martin alike, that whatever’s going on with her it’s not the medication.
But when Emily commits a crime for which she might receive the death penalty, its Dr. Banks’ life that is turned upside down when it's found that the experimental drug he gave her is not what it’s supposed to be, and might be the reason Emily is quickly fading away; now the police are focused on prosecuting him, and he has to set out to prove he knew nothing about the drug other than what those who manufactured it said it should do.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mamie Gummer, Vladimi Versailles, Victor Cruz and David Costabile also star.
