Often, scary movies are psychological thrillers. Movies like this are a good choice to watch at Halloween time. A recent example of this is “Shutter Island,” which was released in 2010.
This movie is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane. It is set in the mid-1950s and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshall assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient at Shutter Island, a mental hospital for the criminally insane. Working with Teddy is Chuck Aule, his new partner, played by Mark Ruffalo. When they get to the hospital, they meet the head doctor, Cawley, played by Ben Kingsley. Teddy and Chuck soon find there is a lot more to this case than meets the eye.
The cast of this film is first-rate. Leonardo DiCaprio is particularly effective as Teddy, showing that he is haunted by memories of his wife, who died a few years earlier. Also strong is Ben Kingsley, who shows that Cawley is very dedicated to his job. One of the best scenes in the film is when Teddy finds an inmate played by Jackie Earle Haley. Haley only appears in this scene, but he still gives a memorable performance.
The movie is directed with a lot of style by Martin Scorsese. He does a great job making the various dream and flashback scenes very surreal.
“Shutter Island” is very creepy, but the kind of creepy that's fun to watch.
