The Shadow Collector's Edition

After the popularity of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman it seemed that everyone was hoping to bring their own superhero film to the big screen and capitalize on the popularity. In 1994 the pulp classic character The Shadow was brought the big screen with Alec Baldwin leading the charge, but sadly failed to kick off the franchise they were hoping for, but did manage to garner a cult following over the years. Now Shout Factory is bringing The Shadow Collector’s Edition to Blu-ray.

In case you have been in the dark and never seen or heard of the film it is based on the 1930's pulp fiction and radio drama series, that pits the hero against his arch enemy, Shiwan Khan, who plans to take over the world by holding a city ransom using an atom bomb. Using his powers of invisibility and "The power to cloud men's minds", the Shadow comes blazing to the city's rescue. The film sports a great cast besides Alec Baldwin including John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle, Ian McKellan, Jonathan Winters, Tim Curry, James Hong, Ethan Phillips, and martial arts icons Al Leong and James Lew. The approach to this film was great trying to give it that film noir feel to match the time period and character. While this film isn’t without it’s flaws, it actually works fairly well going into it knowing of the somewhat cheesy nature of it all. Baldwin is great for this character and the supporting cast all deliver decent performances, most notably the always amazing Tim Curry as an over the top villain. The film actually holds up fairly well for what it is and maintains the comic book feel that was popular for this genre at the time. Hardcore fans of the Shadow are probably mixed on their feelings of this iconic character, but until we get someone else to step up to bring the character to life at least we have this fun rendition that is sure to entertain on some level.

In addition to the beautiful hi-def transfer of the film, this collection also includes new interviews from director Russell Mulcahy, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller and more as well as the theatrical trailer. Fans will not want to miss out adding this cult hit to their comic movie collection so grab your copy of The Shadow Collector’s Edition Blu-ray when it hits stores on February 25th.
