Shout Factory continues to bring the classics to Blu-ray like no other company. They have been churning out the horror and sci-fi cult hits every month with no sign of slowing down. Their latest release is 1980s Saturn 3 featuring Kirk Douglas, Farah Fawcett, and Harvey Keitel.
Saturn 3 follows a single man and woman scientific team living on one of Saturn's moons to grow food for the starving Earth who have their isolation shattered when a deranged killer, masquerading as a visiting technology expert, arrives at their lonely outpost to take over their work and build a lethal creation: a super-intelligent 8-foot robot. For the time this film was made it actually holds up pretty well. Sure their clothes are dated, but it adds to the nostalgic look and feel of this film. The sets are pretty cool really taking you into a world that you know is futuristic even for today. The cast are obviously all iconic actors and deliver great performances as expected. The story itself works fine, but is a bit convoluted at times. It doesn’t always make things clear to the overall point of it all, but is simplistic enough that you can figure it all out. This is one of those that uses the always great practical effects making for a really visual treat of a style rarely used today.
This movie has moments that are kind of silly and never really feels as urgent as it wanted to be, but still manages to deliver a pretty great science fiction flick. In addition to this classic science fiction film, this Blu-ray also includes commentary, interviews, deleted scenes, and the theatrical trailer. True sci-fi fans will no doubt want to grab a copy of this beautifully transferred film in high-def for an all-new vision of this cult classic.
