After the success and ending of the 1983 sequel to Psycho it came as no surprise when the 1986 sequel Psycho III was released which not only had Anthony Perkins return to the role of Norman Bates but also step into the director’[s chair. Now Shout Factory is giving fans a chance to return to the Bates Motel and brining Psycho II to Blu-ray for the first time.
Psycho III follows Norman Bates still running the Bates motel along with the corpse of his mother killed in the previous film. But when he is forced to deal with a budding relationship, a nosey reporter, and a money hungry struggling musician someone dressed as Mother begins killing again, but is it Norman taking orders from Mother again or is there something more sinister happening? While this film doesn’t sport as clever a story as the previous film it still holds up well as its own entry to the franchise. Perkins is always great in this role and clearly loves the character. With the previous entry Bates was an innocent sucked back into this world, but here he is pretty far gone and is clearly struggling with being the Bates we all knew from the original film. In addition this film took on the more stereotypical slasher film rules with nudity, sex and more graphic kills, but still managed to let some of the slow build stay intact. This sequel may not be as iconic as the original or clever like the first sequel, but still manages to entertain as a solid entry into the franchise. This is an underappreciated film that should be revisited and instead of compared to the first two, should be looked at as a continuation and evolution of Norman Bates.
Once again this release sports a beautiful transfer and enhances the overall viewing experience. Those fans of the first two Psycho films will no doubt want to add this entry into their collection as well. In addition to this h-def transfer of the classic sequel, this Blu-ray also features commentary, interviews, and the theatrical trailer. Be sure to grab your copy when it hits stores on September 24th.
